Latest Version:
Microsoft DirectX 9 is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. The appincludes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs.
The latest version of the Microsoft Windows Gaming API delivers Microsoft's powerful new High-Level Shader Language (HLSL) and features its most-advanced suite of design tools for the development of rich multimedia elements such as full-spectrum color graphics, video, 3D animation and enhanced audio capabilities. Some applications and games require DirectX 9 for PC. However, your computer includes a more recent version of Direct X. If you install and then run an application or game that requires the app, you might receive an error message such as 'The program can't start because d3dx9_35.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.' DirectX 9.0 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 introduces significant improvements across its suite of APIs. DirectSound offers new audio capabilities, DirectShow accelerates video rendering hardware, and Direct3D enhances low-level graphics programmability with new programmable vertex and pixel shader 2.0 models. DirectX9 is supported in Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP!
All modern Windows operating systems include DirectX by default, so you probably won't ever need to install DirectX manually.
However, Microsoft has been known to release updated versions of DirectX, and installing the latest updates might be the fix to a DirectX problem you're having — such as dsetup.dll errors — or may give performance increases in your games and graphics programs.
Follow the easy steps below to update DirectX in any version of Windows. Installing DirectX will take less than 15 minutes.
Depending on the version of Windows you're using, you might not be in need of a new version of DirectX. See the section below these steps to confirm that DirectX will work for your computer. If you're not sure which DirectX version your computer has installed right now, there are instructions for doing that at the very bottom of this page.

All versions of Windows do not support all versions of DirectX. Here's more on how each version of DirectX works across the Windows family. Take note especially on differences in Windows 10 and Windows 8 versus previous versions of Windows.
DirectX 12 is included with Windows 10 and is only supported in that version of Windows. Updates to DirectX 12 related files are only available via Windows Update. No standalone version of DirectX 12 is available.
DirectX 11.4 & 11.3 are only supported in Windows 10. As with DirectX 12.0, updates are only provided via Windows Update.
DirectX 11.2 is supported in Windows 10 and Windows 8 (8.1+) only. Any updates to DirectX 11.2 related files are made available in Windows Update in those versions of Windows. There is no standalone download available for DirectX 11.2.
DirectX 11.1 is supported in Windows 10 and Windows 8. Windows 7 (SP1) is supported as well but only after installing the Platform Update for Windows 7.
DirectX 11.0 is supported in Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7. Support for Windows Vista is available but only after a platform update. Get the 32-bit version here or the 64-bit one here.
DirectX 10 is supported in Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista.
DirectX 9 is supported in Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. If you have a program that calls for a DirectX 9 file in Windows 10 or Windows 8, installing the downloadable version (the process above) is the way to solve that problem — it will not 'downgrade' your DirectX 10/11/12 install! This is also the latest version of DirectX that's compatible with Windows XP.
How to Find the Current DirectX Version Number
You can check which version of DirectX is installed on your computer through the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
DirectX is a collection of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for enhancing multimedia. In the beginning, there were several multimedia APIs released by Microsoft in the name of Direct including Direct 2D, Direct 3D, DirectSound, DirectWrite, DXGI, DirectInput, DirectPlay, DirectMusic and so on. Later on, Microsoft released all these APIs collections in just one package called DirectX.
Quick Summary
Interestingly, the name Xbox also comes from DirectX as Xbox uses the technologies introduced in DirectX. Although DirectX is installed and included in all versions of Windows including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10. The default version of DirectX is different in every version of Windows.

While DirectX takes care of both display and audio, there are three major features of DirectX that you may enable or disable as per your requirement.
For optimum performance, all three of these features should be enabled. To enable or disable these features, follow the steps below:
Please note that if you have multiple graphics cards installed in your PC, there will be multiple display tabs for each graphics card. You can enable or disable DirectX features for each graphics card separately.
Download DirectX
From Windows 8 onwards, Microsoft is not distributing DirectX separately. If you want to update DirectX, you will need to enable Windows Updates.
For Windows 10 (DirectX 12)
DirectX 12 does not have any manual standalone setup which can be downloaded separately. It comes directly from Microsoft Update. So if you want to keep your DirectX version updated, you should enable automatic Windows Updates if disabled earlier. This will make sure that your DirectX 12 on Windows 10 is up to date. Tip: You can enable or disable Windows Update using the command line.
The same procedure applies for Windows 8 (DirectX 11.1) and Windows 8.1 (DirectX 11.2)
For Windows 7 (DirectX 11)
If you are using Windows 7, you can download the DirectX 11 update for Windows 7 from here:
For Windows Vista (DirectX 10)
I have not been able to find the direct download link for DirectX 10 but there are forks of DirectX 10 available for download. You can download these to upgrade your Windows XP to DirectX 10 but these are not recommended. That’s why I’m only listing their names and not the download links. You can search Google for the actual download files:
